*June Meeting

WEST SURREY WINE SOCIETY JUNE MEETING

MONDAY 17th JUNE, 7.30pm for 8.00

A Run Around the Rhone –Presented by Steven Spurrier

June has become our fine evening – and this will probably be the finest ever! We are extraordinarily fortunate to have Steven Spurrier as our speaker. Steven will present some wonderful top quality wines from the Northern and Southern Rhone that he has selected from his personal cellar including well known names Hermitage, Cote-Rotie, Saint-Josephe, Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. And for our pre-meeting drinks we will enjoy a Cremant from his own Bride Valley Vineyard in Dorset.

Steven is one of the world’s leading authorities on wine, a celebrated critic, retailer, teacher and consultant. He was the visionary behind the legendary “Judgement of Paris” in 1976, which shocked the then staid conservative world of wine when a Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon from California were ranked above some of the most prestigious wines of Burgundy and Bordeaux by judges including famous French experts. The story was made into the film ’Bottle Shock’ where Steven was portrayed by Alan Rickman.

Steven started his long career with Christopher and Co in London. In 1976 he moved to Paris and bought a small wine shop. Then came the “Judgement of Paris”, and the rest as they is history. Among current positions he is Consultant Editor for the wine magazine Decanter, organises their World Wine Awards and chairs the Japan Wine Challenge and has amassed more prestigious awards than there is space to list.
